General Breed Information

The Bleus de Gascogne was created through selective breeding. The aim of the breeding program is to create a dog that is a smaller version of the Grand Bleu de Gascogne. The Bleus de Gascogne originated in France, where it was used to hunt small quarry. Many specimens of this breed were brought to the United States in the late 17th century and were used in the development of various American coonhound breeds.

The height of the Bleus de Gascogne ranges from 20 to 23 inches and its weight falls between 40 and 48 pounds. Dogs of this breed have low set ears on their refined-looking long head. They have a deep chest that provides ample space for their large lungs. They have strong legs and flat thighs with powerful muscles. The feet of these dogs are fairly long and oval in shape, with tan hair and black pads. Their coat is thick and dense. They are tri-coloured-- their body is predominantly white with black markings and heavy roaning that creates the appearance of being blue.

When properly taken care of, the Bleus de Gascogne can live for around 12 years. Dogs of this breed are fairly rare and are hardly seen outside of France.
