General Breed Information

The Black Forest Hound originated in the Czech Republic and is known as the Czech national hound. This is the only scent hound breed that is native to its country. Although dogs of this breed have been used for several centuries, it was only after the Second World War that this breed was formally recognized. It is theorized that Black Forest Hounds are descendants of dogs of the Balkans or of Hungary, which have likely been crossed with gun dogs or other non-hound breeds. This breed is recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale.

Black Forest Hounds are sleek, elegant scenthounds with a height of 17 to 22 inches and a weight of 42 to 55 pounds. These dogs have a long, straight back and a broad chest. Their forelegs are strong and straight, while their hind legs are well-muscled with well-bent hocks. These dogs have feet that are strong, with hards pads and well-arched toes. The eyes of these dogs are deep set and dark brown in colour. Their ears hang close to their cheeks and are rounded at the tips. They have a medium-sized muzzle with a black nose. The teeth of these dogs meet in either a level or scissors bite. Their hardy and wiry coat is black and tan in colour.
