General Breed Information

The Belgrade Terrier's history is rooted in the former Yugoslavia. It is said that dogs of this breed may have been selectively bred because of the country's long history of dog breeding. The Small Greek Domestic Dog is believed to be the ancestor of the Belgrade Terrier.

Belgrade Terriers are similar in appearance to smaller Basset Hound or heaver Beagles and Dachshunds. The Belgrade Terrier is deep-chested and fairly massive, with short, sturdy legs and a slightly elongated back. Dogs of this breed have a round and elegant head, with a muzzle that is hound-like and jaws that are well developed. These dogs carry their ears low. These dogs can vary in size, but most of them are around 12 inches tall. It's common for these dogs to have a short, smooth coat, but there are also Belgrade Terriers that have a long coat or wire-haired coat. It's preferable for the coat of these dogs to fawn with a black saddle-like patch on the back, as well as white markings on the chest, stomach, and legs. They may, however, come in many other colours, both piebald and solid.

Modern Belgrade Terriers are lively, although less agile than the original variety. As pets, these dogs are playful and obedient. They also get along well with children and can tolerate other canines.
