General Breed Information

The first Griffon was presented in 1880 at the Brussels Exhibition. During the 17th century, the Griffon was kept by cab drivers to help them get rid of pests in their stables. Because of the breed's lovable personality, these dogs were used more often as companion dogs. There are three varieties of the Griffon: the Brussels Griffon, the Petit Griffon, and the Belgian Griffons. The breeds used for the development of the Belgian Griffons include the Irish Terrier and Yorkshire Terrier. Belgian Griffons is recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale, the Continental Kennel Club, the National Kennel Club, and the America's Pet Registry, Inc.

The Griffon is a toy dog with a sturdy build and a squarely proportioned body. These dogs have a large, domed head with an undershot jaw. The Belgian Griffons has a coat that is long and wiry, and its face is adorned with fringe. Dogs of this breed have ears that are usually cropped, and a high-set tail that is typically docked. The coat of these dogs can come in a variety of colours such as black and tan, solid black, red-brown and black, and red. These dogs stand 7 to 8 inches and weigh 6 to 12 pounds.

The life span of Belgian Griffons is approximately 12 to 15 years. Health concerns for this breed include respiratory and eye problems. These dogs are also difficult to breed.
