General Breed Information

The Banjara Greyhound is believed to have originated in the less developed regions of India. Dogs of this breed were created to hunt prey. The probable relatives of the Banjara Greyhound are the Mahratta Greyhound and Rampur Greyhound. The Continental Kennel Club is among the few kennel clubs that recognize the Banjara Greyhound. Because these dogs lived only in isolated areas and there hasn't been much done to continue the development of the breed, not much information is available about these dogs.

Banjara Greyhounds are tall and lean. These dogs have a height of 27 to 29 inches and a weight of 50 to 65 pounds. They have straight and strong forelegs, and hind legs that have good stifle angulations. Banjara Greyhounds have a narrow, long head that is held high. Their almond-shape eyes are dark-coloured, and their ears are feathered and carried flat on their head. Their muzzle is narrow and long, ending in a nose that is black. The teeth of these dogs meet in either a scissors or level bite. Their neck is arched and long, and their chest has a good depth with well-sprung ribs. The rough and silky coat of these dogs is black in colour and has a mottling of blue or gray.

Banjara Greyhounds have a life expectancy of around 13 to 14 years. These dogs can get along well with children and other pets.
