History The Aryan Molossus originated in Afghanistan, and is considered to have close ties with Sage Koochee dogs and other Central Asian breeds. Dogs of this breed were used to resolve disputes among tribes in Afghanistan. When problems arise, tribesmen would approach the breeders of the Aryan Molossus. When both sides each has a dog, the two dogs would be dropped into a pit to fight. The dog that loses dies during the fight or is killed afterwards. In using these dogs, tribes and individuals are able to solve their problems without any human casualties.
Nowadays, the Aryan Molossus is a very rare breed. These dogs can be found only in the mountain regions of Afghanistan, because they were taken there during the Soviet occupation in an attempt to save the dogs from being killed by Russians. At that time, Russians were destroying these aggressive indigenous dogs.
Appearance The Aryan Molossus is a large dog with a muscular and well-built body. Dogs of this breed look scruffy and they vary in appearance. These dogs have a very dense, plush, short coat, and their undercoat is also very dense. The eyes of these dogs are dark-coloured. These dogs have a deep and muscular chest. The tail of these dogs are held high and are curled over their backs. They are also recognized more because of their geographic origin and not due to their physical characteristics.
Colours Dogs of this breed are usually grey-sable in colour. Some dogs, however, may sport white markings on their chest and feet.
Temperament Being a dominant dog, the Aryan Molossus shouldn't be placed near other dominant dogs, especially those of the same sex. Dogs of this breed are courageous and good-natured. These dogs are very wary of strangers, and they would be ready to defend and protect their owners. Their loyalty and courage make them excellent watchdogs and guard dogs.
Weight A large breed, the Aryan Molossus can grow up to 34 inches and can weigh more than 200 pounds.
Problems These dogs are fairly healthy and have no known genetic health problems. Ailments afflicting this breed are those common to all types of dogs.
Living Conditions Dogs of this breed are not supposed to be kept inside small households or apartments. It's advisable for owners to provide these dogs with a large, fenced yard where they can keep watch and alert family members when intruders appear.
Requirements The Aryan Molossus needs plenty of exercise. Owners should take these dogs out for long walks daily. It would also be good for these dogs to run around in a large, secure area. When in public, these dogs should always be leashed.
Training Requirements These dogs should be trained right from puppyhood. The Aryan Molossus is a dominant dog, so it needs an owner who is experienced in training dominant breeds. It's important for these dogs to undergo extensive socialization to curb their aggressive tendencies. Firm training methods are advisable for these dogs, although owners must not resort to harsh training or punishment. It would also be good for these dogs to undergo obedience training.
Life Expectancy Dogs of this breed are expected to live for less than ten years only.
Grooming These dogs have a smooth, short-haired coat that is easy to care for. Owners just need to brush the coat of these dogs occasionally using a firm bristle brush. These dogs are average shedders, and their coat should be brushed more frequently during the shedding season to aid in the shedding process. A piece of cloth or chamois can also be used to wipe the coat to give it a shiny finish. Bathing or dry shampooing should be done only when necessary.
