General Breed Information
The Cockapoo is a designer breed that originated in the United States. This dog was created by crossing the Poodle with either the English Cocker Spaniel or the American Cocker Spaniel. Cockapoos have been existing in the United States since the 1950s. This dog is also popular in other countries as well. In Sweden, these dogs are called Cockerpoos, and in Australia, they go by the name of Spoodles. The Cockapoo is recognized by various organizations such as the Designer Dogs Kennel Club, the American Canine Hybrid Club, the Cockapoo Club of America, the American Cockapoo Club, and the North American Cockapoo Registry.
Cockapoos stand at 14 to 15 inches and weigh approximately 6 to 19 pounds. There is no breed standard for the Cockapoo, but it is preferred that the coat be curly and dense, or heavily wavy. The acceptable coat colours are tan, white, and cream, or a combination of these colours. The coat of these dogs should be combed and brushed on a regular basis. Clipping of the coat should also be done at least once each year.
The common health problems that may affect Cockapoos include luxating patella, progressive retinal atrophy, and eye disorders. The average life span of these dogs is still lengthy, with many specimens living for around 15 to 20 years.
