General Breed Information
Considered as a hybrid or designer dog, the Bassetoodle is a cross between the Poodle and the Basset Hound. This breed has gained recognition from the American Canine Hybrid Club and the Designer Dogs Kennel Club. Bassetoodles are also commonly used as family dogs because they thrive on human companionship and are happy, friendly, and loving.
Bassetoodles look similar to Petit Basset Griffons, but their whiskers and coat are longer. These dogs are long-bodied, so special care must be taken so that they don't strain their back too much. They also have short legs. When fully grown, they stand at 12 to 13 inches tall and weigh 22 to 25 pounds. The coat of these dogs is medium length and can be curly or wiry. The acceptable coat colours for this breed include red, black and white, tan and black, apricot and white, and red and white. They may also be tricoloured. The coat of these dogs is easy to groom, requiring only regular brushing and some trimming around the eyes and anus.
It's common for Bassetoodles to live for around 10 to 15 years. They can get along well with other dogs, although it's advised that they are kept on a leash because they may have a tendency to follow scents. Owners should also be careful not to overfeed these dogs so that they can maintain a healthy weight.
