Group Terriers (KC)

Origin / History Originating from the southern counties of Munster, Ireland.

 

Appearance Fairly long flat topped head and strong muzzle. Has small drop ears and medium sized dark hazel eyes. Body is short with deep chest and well sprung ribs. Legs are fairly long and strong boned with small feet.

Colours Clear wheaten.

Temperament Lively, energetic, playful, strong minded,

Height and Weight 45 - 49.5 cm in height and 16 - 20.Kg in weight. Males are slightly bigger than females.

Common Health Problems A generally healthy breed, although may suffer from kidney disorder, renal dysplasia. Also known to have had hip dysplasia.

Living Conditions Suited to both country and town houses, although in in a town, needs a property with a garden. Garden needs to be securely fenced to prevent escape.

Exercise Requirements Needs lots of exercise, so either one good long walk, of an hour or more or a couple of shorter but still decent length brisk walks as well as play time in the garden.

Training Requirements Not an easier breed to train. Needs strong leadership. Do best with fun reward based training sessions which are best kept short to maintain attention.

Life Expectancy 13 - 14 years.

Grooming The soft abundant, silky, wavy or curly coat needs almost daily brushing to prevent matting and tangles. Show dogs have long hair over the eyes, but most pet owners clip around the eyes. The coat does not moult.

Coat will need extra attention after muddy walks.
