Group Utility Dog

Origin / History The Shiba Inu is an ancient breed from Japan which dates back to at least the 3rd century B.C. It was not officially recognized as a breed until 1928. They were bred originally to hunt small game and birds.

The breed suffered heavily in World War II and actually became close to extinction, in part due to a distemper epidemic.

They are the most common dog in Japan where its there smallest native breed and predominantly kept as a companion.

Appearance The Shiba Inu is a well proportioned and well muscled breed with a toy dog / teddy bear appearance. It has a dense double coat which is stiff on the outside with a soft woolly undercoat. The hair on the curled tail is longer and stands to give the tail a brush like look.

Its face is pointed and it has triangular pricked up ears which are slightly forward.

Males and females look different , with the males certainly appearing more masculine.

Colours Red, tan or black, sesame (sable), salt and pepper, red grey, black, and white.

Temperament They are considered a good natured dog. They are bold and brave as well as independent. Loyal to there family.

Height and Weight 33 - 41 cm in height. 8 - 14 Kg in weight

Common Health Problems Generally a healthy breed. If anything hip dysphasia may be a problem for a small minority.

Living Conditions An active breed which is more suited to the country but will do okay in urban areas with a secure garden.

Exercise Requirements The Shiba Inu is an active breed that needs a good daily walk of at least an hour a day.

Training Requirements They need firm handling and do so best with reward based training. Off inexperienced owners.

Life Expectancy 12- 15 years.

Grooming They have a double coat which sheds heavily seasonally. The just need basic at least once a week brushing. The coat doesn't need clipping.
