Group Pastoral Dogs (KC)

Origin / History Originated in the Shetland Isles of Scotland. They are a small sheep herding do. They were bred to guard the flocks and prevent cattle crossing un hedged fields on the island. They would also guard the farmers house.

 

Appearance Moderately broad head, with small tip ears. Medium body with deep chest and well sprung ribs. fairly long and strong boned legs and oval feet. Medium length tail.

Colours Tricolour, from pale tan to dark mahogany, blue merle, with white markings.

Temperament Intelligent, affectionate, sensitive, gentle.

Height and Weight 34 - 39 cm in height and 6 - 7 Kg in weight. Males and females are usually the same size.

Common Health Problems Puppies should be tested for Collie Eye Anomaly. They may also suffer progressive retinal eye disease, dislocating knee caps, Von Willebrands disease, hip malformation, epilepsy, heart defects and thyroid disease.

Living Conditions Life in the country is the most ideal location for this breed to live. They will do fine in a town or even an apartment, but they will certainly need plenty of exercise to keep them healthy. A sensitive breed which is not recommended for hectic families.

Exercise Requirements An active small breed, with a working background, so needs plenty of exercise everyday to keep them healthy and happy.

Training Requirements A very easy breed when it comes to training. They are a sensitive breed who do best with encouraging, reward based training methods.

Life Expectancy 14 - 15 years.

Grooming Long straight harsh coat, with a short, dense soft undercoat needs daily brushing to prevent matting. They moult heavily twice a year. During the moult it may be best to give them a bath to get rid of as much hair as possible.
