Origin /
History A breed which has been around since at least the 1600's in Brussels. They are thought to have originated in Flanders where they were used in rat catching competitions.
Appearance Foxy like face with broad head and sharp muzzle and prick ears. Short deep chested body with moderately long legs with are fine boned for size. No tail.
Colours In most countries only black. In the UK other solid colors are accepted including cream and fawn.
Temperament Alert, lively, active, curious, devoted to owner, noisy, good watch dog,
Height and
Weight 22 - 33cm in height and 5.5-7.25 Kg in weight. Males are the top end of the ranges and females which are generally smaller are the lower end of of the ranges.
Common Health
Problems Considered an alround healthy breed. If anything may suffer from hypothyroidism, Legg Perthes disease and epilepsy.
Living Conditions Suited to both country and town life. If living in a town it must be a house with a garden, which must also be very secure to prevent escape. This is an active breed which needs the garden for playtime and for exploring.
Exercise
Requirements A very lively breed, especially for one of the toy breeds. Needs at least one good daily walk as well as play time including visits to the park and some off lead free running.
Training Requirements An intelligent breed although not one of the easiest to train. Needs firm and consistent reward based training to get the best results. Does well at agility trials.
Life Expectancy 12 - 16 years.
Grooming Short hard, dense coat needs a good brushing once a week. Moult's twice year, and while in the moult phase will need more grooming.
