Group Toy Dogs (KC)

Origin / History Originating in China the Pug is one of the oldest of toy breeds. It was bought to Europe by Dutch sailors and later found its way to England.

 

Appearance Large round head, with very short muzzle. Has loose skin on its head with large wrinkles. Large dark globular eyes. Small button ears. Sort tail which curls at the tip.

Colours Silver, black, fawn or apricot. The lighter colours have black mask, ears and a diamond on its forehead, as well as trace, which is a line down the back of its head to its tail.

Temperament Sociable, affectionate, brave, headstrong,

Height and Weight 25 - 28 cm in height and 6.5 - 8 Kg in weight. Males and females are generally the same size.

Common Health Problems Being a short faced breed breed its likely to suffer from breathing problems, especially in warmer weather. Also related issue of elongated soft palate. As well as hip malformation, Legg Perthes disease, eye problems and skin tumors.

Living Conditions Will be happy in large country house or town apartment. The priority for this breed is to be with there owner.

Exercise Requirements They have plenty of energy and will enjoy a couple of outing a day, as well as longer walks if given the opportunity.

Training Requirements Not the easiest of breeds to train and teach obedience commands to. they will learn the basics but don't expect to much more from these will suite a bit of extra effort.

Life Expectancy 12- 13 years.

Grooming Short and shiny, smooth coat requires brushing a couple of times a week to remove dead hairs. Pugs malt quite alot. Daily attention needs to be given to checking the head and facial wrinkles. If not checked they can become infected.
