The Miniature Schnauzer is S.A. Champion Schonhardt. I Own The Zoo at Danien. He is imported from Australia and belongs to a friend of mine, Daniela Pera. He is what is known as Salt & Pepper (Other colours are Black, Black & Silver)

Group Utility Dogs (KC)

Origin / History The Miniature Schnauzer is the smallest of the 3 Schnauzer breeds and originated in Germany. It was introduced to the USA in the 1920's and to the UK in the 1960's.

 

Appearance Long flat head and prick ears. Medium length legs which are strong boned.

Colours Black, pepper and salt, black and silver. Some countries accept pure white.

Temperament Lively, active, affectionate, obedient, intelligent,

Height and Weight 30.5 - 36 cm in height and 6 - 7Kg in weight, with males being slightly larger than females and the higher end of the ranges.

Common Health Problems A fairly healthily breed some suffer from hereditary eye problems, progressive retinal atrophy and cataracts. Discuss these issues with breeds and make sure your puppy is from healthy stock. Has also be known to suffer from Legg Perthes disease, von Willebrands dies ease, and diabetes.

Living Conditions Very adaptable breed which will make a good home in the country or in a city apartment, although if this is the case it will need more daily walks.

Exercise Requirements Needs good daily walk and will certainly prefer more frequent walks or longer treks in the countryside.

Training Requirements A small breed which is well suited to both obedience and agility training. The are intelligent and quick to learn. Firm and consistent reward base training sessions which don't go on to long are best for achieving good results.

Life Expectancy 13 - 14 years.

Grooming Rough hard coat which needs a brush almost daily. The long beard will need need thorough brushing to prevent tangles. Coat also needs hand stripping every 6 months. Some owners prefer to go for basic clip which will affect the coat and therefore not acceptable for show dogs but fine for your average pet dog.
