Group Terriers (KC)

Origin / History The Lakeland Terrier is a member of the terrier family of dogs, whose origin can be traced back to the 18th century. They were initially bred in the England's Lake District, which is how the name was derived. Built for the purposes of hunting vermin, this working dog was also called the Patterdale Terrier or Fell Terrier.

This canine is a cross between the English Wirehaired Terrier and the Bedlington Terrier. Aside from vermin – fox, otter and badger are other animals which the Lakeland Terrier was trained to hunt. Today, they are mostly used as a watchdog and a house pet, although they have retained their skillful hunting instincts.

Appearance This dog breed is built with a box-like yet narrow body, which is smaller in size when compared to other working dogs. It has long neck and legs with a tail which is set high up from its hindquarters.

A mature Lakeland Terrier should measure about14 inches to its withers, while the weight should be around 17 pounds. Its eyes should be prominently set against the head, although they are oval shaped with brown rims. The muzzle of this dog breed should also be strong. The coat is double-layered – the outer layer of which should be tough and wiry, while the under laying coat should be softer in texture. They are similar in appearance to the Welsh Terrier

Colours This dog breed appears in a wide array of colors which are all accepted in the show ring. These colors include a combination of black and tan; liver and blue; grizzle and tan, while the solid colors range from black, blue, red, wheaten and liver.

Temperament Pet owners would find that this breed of dog has a cheerful personality. They are an affectionate bunch which can get along well with children. Unlike other Terriers that do not get along with dogs of other breed, the Lakeland Terrier can socialize with other breeds and animals as long as they are trained early in life to do so.

Shy terriers of this breed are rarely found. Instead, they are confident, bold, feisty, determined and fun-loving. When used as a guard dog, this canine breed is suitable because they have an alertness to them which is a natural trait.

On a daily basis, the Lakeland Terrier has a hyperactive, intense and a quick-to-react personality.

Height and Weight They range between 33 - 38 cm in height and 6 - 8Kg in weight.

Common Health Problems There are no known hereditary health problems for this sturdy dog breed.

Living Conditions This dog breed is a highly energetic creature which is quick to chase fleeing things. They can live indoors or in an apartment setting, even without the benefits of a yard, as long as they are given enough exercise. Owners who also have a pet hamster, rabbit or cat are not encouraged to keep them as a house dog.

Exercise Requirements Running, jogging, playing catch and taking them to brisk walks are the regular exercise requirements needed by this dog breed. Athletic owners who usually engage in sports will find an active and agile companion in the Lakeland Terrier.

Training Requirements Housebreaking this breed of dogs may prove to be quite a challenge. However, obedience training comes easily since these dogs are intelligent and they pick up instructions easily. Dog trainers and owners should see to it that the dog will be challenged during the training process. It should include a variety of activities instead of routine tricks and commands.

Life Expectancy These dogs can live for about 10 to 12 years, although some last for as long as 16 years.

Grooming Twice or thrice a year is the recommended interval for grooming the Lakeland Terrier. Their coats should be plucked by removing the old layer of hair. The excess hair from the ears should be removed to avoid infection. The same thing applies to the hair between its feet, which should be trimmed regularly. Although this canine variety hardly sheds, they still require intensive and regular grooming to keep them well-looking and healthy.
