Origin / History The Korean Jindo's name was derived from Jindo Island which is located in the province of South Jeolla, South Korea. Its alternative names include Chindo or Jindo Gae. Although its exact origin of breeding is unknown, their first existence in the island was during the13th century. These dogs were utilized as guard dogs during these times and the breed was declared a National Treasure in the late 1930's.

This breed is a native of Jindo Island and it is known to have existed there for centuries now. Today, the white and fawn-colored Korean Jindos are protected by the Korean government – exportation of purebreds is prohibited.

Appearance The Korean Jindo is a member of the Spitz family, which is medium-sized as compared to other breeds. They are not considered to be adult dogs yet until the age of two, but they can reach their full growth potential as early as five months of age.

This dog has erect, pointed ears. Their eyes take the shape of nuts, and those with red eyes are said to be better in hunting than those with the more common brown eyes. They should also have thickly coarse coat with medium-length hair. The tail should be thick and slightly curved over the back. Other dogs with similar appearance include the Akita and the Shiba Inu.

Colours Several colors of this breed exist, although white, fawn and tan Korean Jindos are the most popular. This breed of dogs also comes in black, brindle, gray, as well as a black-tan and red-white color combinations.

Temperament Fiercely loyal, intelligent and strong-willed are the traits which best describe the Korean Jindo's temperament. Over the years, they have proven to be outstanding watchdogs as they have the ability to recognize and protect their masters and their families, and tell them apart from strangers.

On a general scale, they are loving, gentle animals which are eager hunters. They are usually not sociable towards other dog breeds although they tend to become friendly when exposed to a sociable environment at an early age.

Height and Weight They are 49.5 - 54 cm in height and 13.5kg to 18 kg in weight.

In other places, this dog breed should be welcomed as part of the family, since allowing them to stray outdoors or in the backyard may result to mischief. Korean Jindos can easily scale any terrain or climb up walls, which is the reason why they should be kept close indoors, with their masters as their company.

Training Requirements Generally, Korean Jindos because they can be quite a handful to train in being submissive to their masters. The owners need to be firm and consistent when training these strong-willed animals. Positive reinforcement is best applied when training them for obedience. When handled properly, they can easily pick up commands and tricks due to their highly intelligent nature. The training should be done by the owner instead of a complete stranger, who they might be wary with.

Life Expectancy These dogs can live for as long as 12 to 15 years.
