Group Utility Dogs (KC)

Origin / History The Keeshond is one of the Spitz breeds and originated in germany. At some point they were introduced into Holland (the Netherlands) where they have since claimed it as a national breed.

They are very good watch dogs,

Appearance A wedge shaped head, with fairly broad head and short narrowing muzzle, along with small triangular prick ears. A compact body with medium length strong boned legs.

Colours The muzzle is dark and there's black spectacles around the eyes. The coat is a mixture of grey and black with a cream pale grey undercoat.

Temperament Lively,

Height and Weight 41 - 47 cm in height and 16 - 18.5 Kg in weight. Males are larger than females.

Common Health Problems Considered a healthy breed although has been known to suffer hip malformation, Von Willebrands disease, heart conditions and epilepsy. Also prone to skin allergies, so flea control is of extra importance.

Living Conditions Will be at home in the country or a town house with a garden and extra walks.. Not suited to owners of houses who like the heating turned up high as the dogs coat will cause it to overheat. Not a dog that should be left alone as likes to be in company of his owners. being left alone may lead to barking problems.

Exercise Requirements They will get by with the standard decent daily walk of about 45 minutes including time off lead up the park.

Training Requirements Average when it comes to training, they are strong minded. They do best with fun reward based training sessions.

Life Expectancy 12 - 14 years

Grooming They have a long, straight standoff coat which needs a a good brush every week to prevent tangles and matting. They need extra grooming when they moult twice a year.
