Origin / History The Giant Schnauzer originated from the regions of Württemberg and Bavaria in Germany. It was during the latter part of the 19th century when cattlemen realized that they needed a bigger companion during driving and herding, and that the standard-sized Schnauzer wasn't big enough to accomplish such tasks. The Schnauzer was then crossed with the Bouvier des Flandres, the Great Dane, and other sheep dogs.

The mixture of the breeds was successful and the Giant Schnauzer was born. It became a very popular breed and soon, this dog assumed many roles. As a police dog, guard dog, drover, or military dog, the Giant Schnauzer was the ideal type for intense situations.

The Giant Schnauzer makes the perfect utility or working dog, but it is also an ideal companion.

Appearance The Giant Schnauzer has soft and dense outercoat and the wiry and harsh undercoat. The Giant Schnauzer possesses a very strong appearance, and its shape is elongated and rectangular. This breed features pointy ears, powerful jaws, deep chest, sloping shoulders, straight back, high-set tail, and firm front and hind legs.

Colours The Giant Schnauzer usually comes in black, fawn, salt and pepper, or black and tan.

Temperament There is no doubt that the Giant Schnauzer looks like a formidable and powerful dog, but it is also very intelligent and versatile. It's easy to train this dog because of its willingness to learn. An owner has to be consistent with the training, and this must be done firmly, but not harshly. If given the proper training, the Giant Schnauzer can be a very loyal and loving companion, with its calmness and reliability. The Giant Schnauzer can be extremely protective of its owners, and it exhibits keen observance for strangers.

Height and Weight 60 - 70 cm in height and 32 - 35 Kg in weight. Males are larger than females and at the top end of the size ranges.

Common Health Problems The Giant Schnauzer shows susceptibility to toe cancer, which can be fatal to this breed. An assortment of autoimmune diseases can also harm this type of dog. Some of these are hypothyroidism and autoimmune hemolytic anemia or AIHA. Epilepsy, hip dysplasia, and incontinence are other potential health problems for the Giant Schnauzer.

Living Conditions The Giant Schnauzer is a very large dog and the apartment setting is not appropriate for it. This dog can display signs of hyperactivity indoors, so it would be best if an owner has a huge area where this dog can run around. Acres of land would be ideal.

Exercise Requirements A great need for daily exercise is required by the Great Schnauzer, so an owner must be prepared to take this type of dog out for a walk everyday. One can bring this dog along during walks, runs, hikes, or bike rides. For a more advanced form of exercise, one may even take the Giant Schnauzer to obstacle courses and similar activities.

Training Requirements Because the Giant Schnauzer shows high intelligence, one can easily train this dog. But while this dog is willing to learn, an owner must be consistent with the training. It would also be best to be firm with this dog, but never harsh.

Life Expectancy 10 - 11 years.

Grooming The Giant Schnauzer has a lifespan of 12 to 15 years.
