Origin / History This breed originated in Germany and is believed to be a descendant of early European guardian and herding breeds. It is said that the German Pinscher can be traced back to 1836, when their popularity surpassed that of Mops. Back then, these dogs were used for guarding coaches. They were also used for killing vermin. During the 1890s, the German Pinscher was officially recognized in Germany as a distinct breed. Like other European breeds, these dogs decreased in number because of the war. Thus, by 1949, only a few of these dogs were left, putting the breed on the brink of extinction. Fortunately, Werner Jung started breeding these dogs using two female German Pinschers and some oversized male Miniature Pinschers.

The German Pinscher plays a big role in the development of the breeds Miniature Pinscher and Dobermann. Although the German Pinscher still remains to be a rare breed, its popularity is now increasing, thanks to its intelligence, great personality, and size.

Appearance These dogs are medium in size and tall in height. They have smooth, glossy, and strong coats. Their ears are alert and have natural folds, but these are sometimes cropped. These dogs have long muzzles and black, medium-sized noses. They sport straight backs. Their tails can also be docked, although there are some countries that prohibit this procedure.

Colours The coats of these dogs can come in colors of fawn, red, black and tan, and dark brown with markings of yellow. The most common color is black with markings of tan.

Temperament These dogs are lively and high-spirited, with even temperaments. Since they are highly intelligent and willful, they can become manipulative and assertive. Many dogs of this breed have tendencies of becoming possessive of various things or people. These dogs are devoted to their families and they love being included in many family activities. They crave human attention and interaction. They are good with children, so long as the children are respectful and considerate towards the dogs. Since these dogs have natural hunting instincts, they will be tempted to chase cats and other household pets. They are also observant and wary of strangers, both of which are characteristics that make them good watchdogs.

Height and Weight They should be 41 - 48 cm in height and weigh 11- 16 Kg.

Common Health Problems These dogs are generally very healthy. Like other dogs, though, they can be afflicted with hip dysplasia.

Living Conditions Due to the fact that these dogs crave being with their family, they will do well inside apartments just as long as they are being provided with enough exercise. It would also be best if these dogs are provided with a fenced yard where they can run around and do some activities.

Exercise Requirements Dogs of this breed have high energy levels and they should be given some outlets for their energy because they can become destructive if they don't get enough activity. Thus, these dogs should be taken out for brisk walks or jogs daily. They should also be allowed to play and run around in secure areas. Tracking and agility exercises will also be enjoyable for this breed.

Training Requirements Although German Pinschers are independent thinkers, these dogs can excel in obedience if trained properly since they are eager to please and willing to learn. Methods of positive reinforcement will be a good way of training these dogs. It is also important that these dogs undergo frequent socialization early on in their lives so that they will grow up to be well-mannered dogs.

Life Expectancy The life spans of these dogs usually range from around 12 to 14 years.

Grooming Coats of these dogs require only a little grooming. Owners just need to comb and brush their dogs' coats to get rid of dead hair.
