Group Utility Dogs (KC)

Origin / History These dogs originated from Germany in 1960. It was through the efforts of Charlotte Baldamus, Julius Wipfel, and other people that this breed was formed. It was the intention of the group to develop a breed that has the best qualities of the Wolfspitz and the Chow Chow. They then set out to create the breed, the first result of which was called the Wolf-Chow. Twelve years after their first attempt, the breed was cross-bred with a Samoyed, and the result was then termed as the Eurasier. The Eurasier gained recognition from the Fédération Cynologique Internationale during 1973, and was later on recognized by the Canadian Kennel Club in 1995. Today, Eurasiers make great family dogs, although they are still considered as rare in places outside of Germany.

Appearance These dogs are medium-sized, Spitz type dogs. They have well-constructed, balanced physiques. They have medium-length, loose hair all over their bodies, and they also sport thick undercoats. Their faces, ears, front legs, and muzzles, though, have only short coats. The coats on their necks are longer than the coats on their bodies, but they are not long enough to form manes. They have prick ears, and their tongues can come in colors of blue-black, pink, or spotted.

Colours Acceptable colors for these dogs' coats include red, gray, fawn, cream, black, sable, and black and tan. Their coats can also sport combinations of these colors, but they cannot be liver-colored, pure white, or have patches of white.

Temperament These dogs were developed for the purpose of being family companions, and they do well for this role. They love being with their family members, and they are loyal and affectionate with them. These dogs are confident, calm, even-tempered, and sensitive to the attitudes and temperament of those people they associate with. They are enthusiastic and energetic to those who want to play with them, but they are very gentle when it comes to dealing with children and the elderly.

These dogs can be quite sociable, as they can get along well with other canines, and even with cats and other household pets due to the fact that they do not have any hunting instincts. They can make good watchdogs as they are protective of their territory and family, but they won't attack strangers, they'll just growl when they are provoked.

Height and Weight They are 48 - 58 cm in height and 23 - 32 Kg in weight.

Common Health Problems Like other dogs, Eurasiers have their own share of health problems which include patellar luxation, diabetes, eyelid entropion, eyelid ectropion, and dystichiasis. They may also develop problems with their thyroid, teeth, and pancreas. They may also be afflicted with hip dysplasia.

Living Conditions These dogs should not be kept inside a kennel or left confined in a room. They shouldn't be chained as well. When left alone, these dogs may develop depression. They can live indoors, but it would be best if they are provided a yard where they can run around and play. They do best when they are with their family.

Exercise Requirements These dogs need moderate amounts of exercise so that they will stay physically and mentally healthy. They should be taken out for walks on a daily basis and should be given the chance to play and run around with other dogs. It's also important that these dogs be included in family activities.

Training Requirements It is necessary for these dogs to undergo basic obedience training while they are still young so that they will not develope behavioral problems. Since these dogs are very intelligent and eager to please, they will be easy to train, provided that their owners do not use harsh methods of training. It's best if positive reinforcement methods are used when training these dogs. It's also essential that they are properly socialized at an early age so that they will grow up to become mature, well-mannered dogs.

Life Expectancy The life spans of these dogs range from around 11 to 13 years.

Grooming These dogs are easy to groom. Owners just have to comb and brush their dogs' coats in order to keep them clean. When these dogs get wet, they should be towel-dried. They also need to be combed and brushed intensely once in a week. These dogs shed their undercoats twice in a year, and more attention should be given to grooming during these times.
