Origin / History The Dobermann (also known as Doberman Pinscher) was developed in Germany in 1890. The development of this breed is credited to Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann, who wanted to create his ideal guard dog which is agile, intelligent, and strong. After his death, the breed he developed was named after him. After that, Philip Gruening and Otto Goeller continued developing the breed.

The Dobermann is said to be a mix of various breeds such as the Beauceron, the Pinscher, the Rottweiler, the black Greyhound, the Thuringian Shepherd Dog, the Weimaraner, the Great Dane, the Manchester Terrier, the German Shepherd Dog, and the German Shorthaired Pointer. However, the exact ratios of how these were mixed are still uncertain until now.

During the late 1970s, the Dobermann was considered as the second most popular dog breed in the United States. This breed is also being used by the U.S. Marines as their official combat dog.

Appearance These dogs are muscular and powerful. They have short back, well-proportioned chests, and muscular necks. Their coats are close-fitting, hard, and have short, thick hairs. They sport dark eyes with intelligent expressions. Some of these dogs have their ears cropped and their tails docked, but the process of cropping and docking has already been pronounced as illegal in other countries. Nowadays, there are many owners who just leave their dogs looking natural since the process of cropping and docking pains the dog.

Colours Coats of these dogs can be black, blue-gray, black and tan, red, white, or fawn. They also sport markings of tan on their muzzles, feet, chests, and legs. In some kennel clubs, markings of white are also acceptable.

Temperament These dogs vary greatly when it comes to their temperament. There are some that are aggressive, while some show signs of being submissive. There are those that are family dogs and those that bond strongly with only one person. Since these dogs have been bred to work with humans, they need to interact with humans often. If properly socialized, these dogs can get along well with other household pets as well as children. These dogs are energetic, very intelligent, and can be easily trained.

Height and Weight 61 - 71 cm in height and 30 - 40 Kg in weight. Males are larger than females and at the top end of the size ranges.

Common Health Problems Dogs of this breed may have Von Willebrand's disease (a blood disorder). They may also be afflicted with Cervical vertebral instability (Wobbler's Syndrome), cardiomyopathy, thyroid disease, chronic active hepatitis, and hip dysplasia.

Living Conditions These dogs can be kept inside apartments provided that they will be given enough exercise. It would be best, though, if they are provided with at least an average-sized yard wherein they can play and do some activities. Since these dogs are very sensitive to cold, they should not be left to sleep outdoors, especially in places where the climate is cold.

Exercise Requirements Since Dobermanns are active dogs, they have to be taken out for walks daily. Owners should also allow their dogs to play and run around in a secure area. These dogs can also participate in activities such as flyball, hiking, tracking, swimming, agility trials, and other dog sports. It is important not to overexert puppies, though, as doing so may damage their bones and joints.

Training Requirements Since these dogs can be quite dominant, they need to be trained by someone that the dogs will respect. Training has to be done firmly and consistently using methods of positive reinforcement. It is also important that the dog undergoes continuous socialization so that problems like shyness and over-protectiveness will be avoided.

Life Expectancy The life spans of these dogs range from around 10 to 12 years.

Grooming Owners must always make sure that their dogs' claws are clipped properly. The dogs' teeth should also be brushed on a regular basis and must be checked for tartar build-up from time to time. Dead hairs on the Dobermann's coat should also be removed with a knobbed rubber glove when the dog is shedding.
