Group Utility Dog (KC)

Origin / History The Chow Chow is a very ancient breed from China. It has been used for a wide range of uses including hunting and a guard dog.

Appearance Large broad head with long muzzle and small prick ears. Has blue tongue and gums. A strong thick neck leads to a short broad, deep chest with well sprung ribs. The heavily boned legs are medium in length. The hind legs are very straight.

The breed was introduced to England around 1760, actually as zoo animals rather than pet dogs.

Colours Red, fawn, black, cream, white and blue.

Temperament Stubborn, aloof, self-assertive, independent, strong willed, dominant.

Height and Weight 46 to 56 cm in height and 20 - 32 Kg in weight. Males are larger than females nd at the top end of the ranges, while females are the lower end of the ranges.

Common Health Problems Open to a wide range of inherited conditions including hip deformity, thyroid disease, entropian (inturning eyelids) as well as skin problems and heart problems.

Living Conditions This breed can adapt to living in the country or a town house. If living in a town would much prefer a house with a garden.

Exercise Requirements Will get by with standard daily walk but will enjoy more frequent or longer walks each day. Care has to be taken that the dog dog not overheat in hot weather.

Training Requirements Not at all an easy breed to train, very stubborn and independent. Needs firm training and a fair amount of patience. Best to get this breed socialized with people and other dogs as soon as possible from a young age or this may lead to problems later on.

Life Expectancy 14 - 15 years.

Grooming There are two coat varieties and each has different grooming requirements. The rough-coat has a very dense fur coat which needs brushing daily to prevent matting. The smooth-coats which is less dense, needs attention at least a couple of times a week. The breed moult's twice a year and will require more grooming during those times.
