Group Terriers

Origin / History Originated in the Scottish highlands where it was bred for hunting foxes, badgers and otters. The name "Cairns" is a rocky area where the terriers were used to hunt the game.

Appearance Broad head with fairly long muzzle and prick ears. Compact body with deep chest. Short strong boned legs and large forefeet than hindfeet.

Colours Sandy, red, cream, wheaten, grey to very near black, and brindle.

Temperament Lively, active, bossy,

Height and Weight 28 - 30.5 cm in height and 6.5 - 7.5 Kg in weight. Males and females are usually the same size.

Common Health Problems An alround healthy breed, which if prone to anything, kneecap dislocation like alot of toy breeds. Also sometimes eye and skin problems.

Living Conditions Ideally suited to the country but will also adapt well to town life, although needs access to a securely fenced garden to prevent escape.

Exercise Requirements Needs alot of exercise for a toy breed. A good long walk or a few brisk shorter walks a day, including time off lead free running.

Training Requirements Being a terrier, not consider an easier breed to train in obedience but does well with firm reward based training which should also be lots of fun and not go on for to long.

Life Expectancy 13 - 14 years.

Grooming Hard uppercoat needs a quick brush daily or most days. They will also need hand stripping a couple of times a year. they should not be clipped.
