Origin / History The Bullmastiff originated in England, and was said to have existed as far back as the 1700s. This breed was achieved by crossing Bulldogs with Mastiffs. This dog was used by rich estate owners for fighting off and chasing down game poachers. At first, these dogs were bred to have dark coats so that they would be naturally camouflaged during the night. Later on, though, light coats became preferable when these dogs served as estate dogs for wealthy people.

In 1993, the American Kennel Club bestowed recognition upon this breed. These dogs make great hunting guards, and they aid in police work and military work. In fact, South Africa’s Diamond Society uses these dogs as watchdogs. Nowadays, these dogs also serve as companions and guardians to many families.

Appearance These dogs have powerful physiques but they do not give off the appearance of looking cumbersome. They have wrinkled, broad heads and black noses that have big nostrils. Intelligent, alert expressions are apparent in their medium-sized, dark hazel eyes. Their ears are v-shaped and hang close to their faces. They also possess short-haired coats that are slightly rough in texture.

Colours Their coats should come in shades of red, fawn, or brindle. They can have white markings on their chests, but other than that, white markings in their bodies are not acceptable. They must have black muzzles and dark markings in areas around their eyes.

Temperament These dogs are alert, devoted, and good-natured. They are affectionate and protective of their family members, and often yearn for the attention of humans. These dogs are powerful and need to be trained by a firm and authoritative owner. These dogs can be stubborn sometimes. They tolerate children, but they can be aggressive towards other dogs. These dogs are typically calm, even-tempered, loyal, and intelligent.

Height and Weight 61 - 69cm in height and 45 - 60 Kg in weight. Males are larger than females and at the top end of the size ranges.

Common Health Problems Prospective owners of Bullmastiffs should be aware that these dogs can be afflicted with a variety of health problems. These dogs are prone to having hyperthyroidism, hip dysplasia, cancer, and heart conditions. They can also develop eye problems such as progressive retinal atrophy, eyelid entropion, and eyelid ectropion. They are also susceptible to having hip dysplasia, allergy problems, and dysfunctions of the immune system. They can also have gastric torsion and bloat.

Living Conditions These dogs can live inside apartments, but owners must make sure that these dogs get the exercise they need since they tend to become relatively inactive when kept inside the house. It would be great if the dog has a small yard to do activities in. Since they don’t do well when it comes to tolerating extreme temperatures, it would be best if these dogs sleep indoors along with their human family.

Exercise Requirements Due to the fact that these dogs have a tendency to be lazy, owners must make sure to provide them with regular exercise. These dogs need to be taken for long walks daily. Owners should also see to it that they do not overfeed their dogs as they grow heavy easily.

Training Requirements Since Bullmastiffs can be quite stubborn, they should be made to undergo obedience training at an early age. The owner should demonstrate consistency and authority when training his dog. These dogs are sensitive to tones of voice, so the owner must speak to his dog with a firm-- but not harsh-- tone. These dogs should also be properly socialized with other animals and humans while it is still young so as not to develop over-aggressiveness.

Life Expectancy These dogs have life spans that range from 9 to 11 years.

Grooming These dogs are easy to groom. They only shed little hair, and their coats must be combed and brushed with a firm bristle brush regularly. Bathing should be done only when necessary. Their nails should also be trimmed periodically.
