Group Toy Dogs (KC)

Origin / History There are some theories stating that the Bolognese is a descendant of bichon-type dogs which were prevalent in southern Italy during the 11th or 12th century. The Bolognese was named after the city of Bologna and are sometimes called as Bichon Bolognese. These dogs became popular companion dogs among Spain's nobility when a political leader from Italy brought some as gifts during the 1400s. In Europe, this breed increased in popularity, and has even been featured in paintings by Tiziano Vecelli and Francisco Goya.

There was a time, though, when these dogs decreased in number. Gian Franco Giannelli led efforts to bring back the abundance of these dogs, but even so, this breed remains to be a rare one. These dogs have not been given recognition by the American Kennel Club. The Havanese and Bichon Frise are close relatives of this breed.

Appearance These dogs are compact, stocky, and small in size. Their coats are fluffy, long, and woolly in texture, and their hairs are shorter on their face. They have square builds, with their height being equal to the length of their body. Their nose and eyes are large and dark. They have highly set, long ears, and the length of their neck is equal to the length of their head.

Colours The coats of these dogs are pure white and they do not sport any markings or patches of any other color.

Temperament Cheerful, focused, intelligent, and obedient, these dogs are very attached to their family, often following them from one room to another. Although they do not bark as often as other dogs do, they will alert their family members when they sense danger, and thus make good watchdogs. They love bonding with their family, and they are often affectionate and playful. Since these dogs enjoy being with family members, they should not be left alone. They also get along well with other pets, as well as children, although young children must be supervised when they are around the dog.

Height and Weight They are 25 - 33 cm in height and weight 3 - 4 Kg.

Common Health Problems Known as a generally healthy dog, the Bolognese does not show signs of susceptibility to any major health problems.

Living Conditions These dogs can live inside apartments, but owners still have to make sure that they let their dogs out and give them enough exercise. They can also do well without a yard.

Exercise Requirements Since these dogs tend to be active, they need their daily dose of exercise and owners must take out their dogs for walks on a daily basis. Playing with the dogs will also be good, but the walks must still be done because dogs that do not get to go on walks daily are more prone to developing behavioral problems.

Training Requirements Dogs of this breed are eager to please, thus making them very easy to train for obedience, especially if training starts at a very young age. Part of their training is to take them out for walks on a daily basis, so as to avoid behavioral problems from developing. Awards-based training methods will be great, as using food and praise will be effective in reinforcing good behaviors. These dogs must not be treated harshly as doing so will only bode for negative effects. It is also important that these dogs undergo socialization at an early age.

Life Expectancy These dogs are expected to live for as long as 12 to 14 years.

Grooming These dogs shed little to no hair, but their coats should be combed daily because they're prone to getting tangles. The coats, though, must not be trimmed or clipped. Owners should take the time to give their dogs monthly grooming sessions. The coats of these dogs are said to be hypoallergenic.
