Group Hound (KC)

Origin / History Bloodhounds are known to have existed for over a thousand years already. The breed was perfected in Belgium and the dogs were imported to England by the Normans. Dogs of this breed are also called as Flemish Hounds or St. Hubert Hounds. These dogs were bred for the purpose of tracking humans and animals.

There are many people who think that Bloodhounds are named as such because they have a taste for blood. Truth is, these dogs are nonviolent, and their name comes from the fact that they underwent a very high degree of breeding. Nowadays, they are used both as trackers and as family companions.

Appearance Dogs of this breed have large skeletal structures and majority of their weight is in their bones, which happen to be very thick. They have coats that are hard and composed solely of fur. Their ears are long and droopy, and they have wrinkled, loose skin. Their noses are black and sit at the tip of their long muzzles. They have dark eyes that possess dignified, mournful expressions. These dogs also have strong shoulders and powerful backs that allow them to work for such long times without taking breaks.

Colours These dogs have coats that are in color combinations of tan and black, tan and liver, or red and tawny. During the Middle Ages, there also existed a Bloodhound called a Talbot Hound, and it was white in color.

Temperament Dogs of this breed are known to be patient, kind, mild-mannered, and noble. They love children, but owners should make sure that their children aren't pestering or hurting their dog. These dogs are typically silent, except when they bark. Aside from being excellent trackers, they also make good companions. When they are at home, they are affectionate and relaxed. Once they are out doing tracking, though, they become relentless and alert. These dogs can get along well with other pets and can even be accepting of strangers. They are highly energetic, independent, and determined. They may even be quite boisterous as puppies.

Height and Weight 58.5 - 68.5 cm in height and 36 - 50 Kg in weight. Males are larger than females and at the top end of the size ranges.

Common Health Problems One of the common health issues of Bloodhounds is that they are susceptible to bloating. Thus, they should be fed two or three small meals instead of giving them just one large meal for the duration of the whole day. Owners must also make sure to avoid having the dogs do exercise right after they have eaten their meals. They are also susceptible to having ear infections and hip dysplasia. There have also been cases of some dogs developing eyelid entropion.

Living Conditions These dogs can be kept inside apartments just as long as they are getting enough exercise. It will be best, though, if they are given an average-sized yard where they could run around and play.

Exercise Requirements Owners of these dogs should make sure that they are providing their dog with sufficient exercise. They should be taken out for long walks daily. They enjoy hiking and hunting, but owners must keep in mind that these dogs tend to follow scents that interest them.

Training Requirements When training Bloodhounds, owners must make sure that they are giving their dogs gentle but firm training. The training methods used must be consistent. Since these dogs tend to be independent, an owner cannot expect them to be fully obedient. These dogs may also take quite some time to housebreak, and an owner must possess lots of patience for this dog. Dogs of this breed are sensitive to a person's tone of voice, so it's best to employ an approving but firm tone when training them.

Life Expectancy The life span of these dogs range from around 10 to 12 years.

Grooming Even though these dogs can emit odor that may be offensive to certain people, this breed is easy to groom. Owners should groom their dogs using a hound glove and they should bathe them only when necessity calls for it. To make the coat gleam, rubbing a chamois or rough towel on it will do the trick. Owners of Bloodhounds must also make sure that their dogs' ears are cleaned on a regular basis.
