Origin / History A Scottish native breed used for a wide range of working jobs, although orgin ally a herder,

 

Appearance A broad flat head with fairly long muzzle and large drop ears. Long body, with deep chest and well sprung ribs. Long strong boned legs.

Colours Various shades of grey and brown, sandy, black, slate blue, and reddish cinnamon.

Temperament Affectionate, active, lively, energetic, intelligent, strong minded,

Height and Weight 51 - 56 cm in height and 18 - 27 Kg in weight. Males are larger than females and at the top end of the size ranges.

Common Health Problems An alround healthy breed, but has been known to suffer hip malformation, eye problems, and lack of thyroid hormone.

Living Conditions Ideally suited to life in the country where they can be taken on long rambling walks and have plenty of free running time. Not really suited to life in a town house, but if that is where it lives the house will need a securely fenced garden and the dog will need plenty of exercise.

Exercise Requirements A very active working breed which needs alot of daily exercise. Long walks as well as time off the lead free running as well as fun play times.

Training Requirements An average breed when it comes to training They do best with a firm and gentle approach. Given the right training they can be trained to a high standard of obedience.

Life Expectancy 12 years.

Grooming The long harsh coat and soft undercoat need daily attention to prevent tangles and matting. Will require even more after muddy walks and meal times.
