Group Hounds (KC)
Origin /
History The Beagle is the smallest hunting hound breed and has been around since at least the the of King Henry VIII in England. It is still commonly used on the hunt in packs in many countries including England and France.
Appearance Long and fairly broad head with thin, fairly long hanging ears. Short deep chested body with shortish, strong boned legs and a long tail.
Colours Any hound colour couch as white and lemon, white and red, tricolour or mottled.
Temperament Active, lively, affectionate, playful.
Height and
Weight 31- 38 cm in height and 8 -14 Kg in weight. Males are usually slightly bigger than the females.
Common Health
Problems generally a very healthy breed. There is a condition known as "beagle Pain Syndrome" which is a neck pain and fever in young beagles. Also known to have suffered from epilepsy and eye problems.
Living Conditions Ideally suited to life in the country. Can live in a town but will needs lots of exercise. Will definitely need a house with a garden, so is not suited to apartment life.
Exercise
Requirements Beagles are bred for running on the hunt so therefore need alot of exercise for a small breed. Either one longer than average walk, say minimum 45 minutes, or a couple of 30 minute plus, walks a day. Adding in playtime will also be enjoyed, especially if with some scent based finding games.
Training Requirements Needs persistent and patient reward based training. This bred is bred for picking up a scent, so teaching recall off lead is not to easy as any scent may be a distraction.
Life Expectancy 14 years.
Grooming A short coat which needs a good brush once a week to remove dead hairs and skin. For a short coat breed, the coat does moult quite alot.
Famous Examples
CompleteDogsGuide Comment An active and affectionate breed suited to owners who lead active lives, preferably in the country. Potential owners be aware that the short coat does shed a fair bit.
