Group Terriers

Origin / History The largest of all the terrier breeds and often referred to as "King of the Terriers". It originated in the valley of the River Aire, Yorkshire where it was bred for otter hunting. It was breed from the Otterhound and the now extinct Old English Terrier and Welsh Harrier.

It has since been used for a wide range of uses including police dogs, search and rescue and therapy dogs, a wide range of uses in the World Wars.

Appearance Long head with small V shaped drop ears, high at side of head. Short muscular. Long strong boned legs and small round feet.

Colours Black and tan or black and dark grizzle.

Temperament Lively, energetic, active, affectionate, strong willed.

Height and Weight 56-61 cm in height and 20 - 23 Kg in weight.

Common Health Problems Generally an alround healthy breed. reported problems have been hip deformity and some skin problems.

Living Conditions Ideally suited to life in the country, however they will do fine in a town house with garden for extra playtimes with owner. Make sure garden is securely fenced alround to prevent escape.

Exercise Requirements Needs lots of exercise, which if it doesn't get could result in behavioral problems. Needs a good long daily walk and time off lead to burn off plenty of energy. Will certainly walk more if given the option.

Training Requirements Needs firm, patient and consistent training sessions combined with fun. Not the easiest to teach obedience but in the right hands they can do very well.

Life Expectancy 12 - 13 years.

Grooming Harsh, dense wiry coat with a smooth shorter undercoat needs quick daily brush. The coat needs stripping to maintain the coat colour and texture. Some owners opt for a clip which gives the same look, but affects the coat and lightens the colour.

Ideal coat for allergy sufferers as the coat does not moult.
